Urucu (Bixa orellana l.) vem do tupi uru-ku que significa vermelho. É o fruto do urucuzeiro, arvoreta nativa na América tropical, que chega a atingir até 6 metros de altura. Apresenta grandes folhas verde claro e flores rosadas. Seus frutos são cápsulas maleáveis, que se tornam vermelhas quando maduras.
A partir da polpa das sementes obtém-se o valioso corante amarelo (orelina) e vermelho (bixina). Por ser um corante com forte pigmentação, a bixina é usada também na indústria têxtil como um corante natural, para coloração de seda, lã e algodão.
Os índios pintam o corpo com a polpa das sementes para se prepararem para seus rituais.
